---Background (Spoilers):
Xelloss is a Mazoku created by the Greater Beast Zelas Metallium over 1000 years ago in the Koma War.
As her only servant, he was given powers far greater than any other priest or general of Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu's subordinates. Basically, he's really really powerful.
During the Koma war, he was able to kill thousands of golden dragons singlehandedly. They've hated him ever since.
In the thousand or so years between the Koma war and serving Hellmaster Phibrizzo, he was sent to find and destroy stray copies of the Claire Bible, so that humans couldn't find a way to defeat Mazoku or call upon the power of the Lord of Nightmares.
Next:
He traveled alongside Lina (sometimes) while searching for any Claire Bible manuscripts they came across, much to the dismay of Zelgadis. Alongside this, he had been sent to keep Lina alive for Hellmaster Phibrizzo, despite seeming to dislike the plans. Phibrizzo's failure and death hadn't bothered him in the slightest.
Try:
He had been sent to Valgarv in an attempt to bring him to Shabranigdu's side. As he expected, this failed, but he had underestimated Valgarv's power, thus taking much damage. His orders then came to ruin Valgarv
During the series, he met the golden dragon Filia, the only person to truly make Xelloss angry. He retaliates by picking on her, causing her equal anger.
Eventually he wound up aiding in the fight to seal Dark Star, as the Mazoku did not want to see the world destroyed by anyone but themselves.

That's the answer you'll probably get when asking him a question he wishes not to answer.
No one knows his true intentions except for himself, going easily from the "Trickster priest" to a heartless mazoku.
He does not disobey his superiors, whether he agrees or not. He'll quickly exlpoit any give that his orders have to suit his own benefit.
He indroduces himself as the trickster priest, which is an accurate statement, seeing as he will trick people to acheive his personal agenda.
He much prefers manipulation over violence.
But he'll beat someone up if need be.
-He feeds off of negative emotions, and doesn't need to eat (but does anyway if he feels like it)
-Praising life around him can weaken him (in some instances, it'll cause him a good bit of pain)

Upon entereing Epyrean, much to his dismay, he lost most of his powers.
He can't cause any massive explosions, or use any basic shamanistic spells. He can continue to teleport, but (what he doesn't know) it will wear him out after a while.
